Interactive Modular Tactile Maps of Rooms for Older Adults with Vision Impairments

Abstract

We present an interactive modular tactile map tailored for older adults with vision impairments, which should help them acquire spatial knowledge of rooms and their inner equipment. As the outcome of our iterative design process, we introduced a design concept that employs skeuomorphic interactive tactile objects that can be placed on a modular interactive tactile map to resemble real rooms. Qualitative evaluation (mean age was 81.5 years) indicates our concept’s ability to help our audience build spatial knowledge of rooms and their equipment.
