Blockchain-based Public Key Infrastructure for Inter-Domain Secure Routing

Abstract

A gamut of secure inter-domain routing protocols has been proposed in the literature. They use traditional PGP-like and centralized Public Key Infrastructures for trust management. In this paper, we propose our alternative approach for managing security associations, Secure Blockchain Trust Management (SBTM), a trust management system that instantiates a blockchain-based PKI for the operation of secure routing protocols. A main motivation for SBTM is to facilitate gradual deployment across Autonomous Systems (ASes) with minimal opera- tional and economical costs. An initial performance evaluation supports the practicality of SBTM and outlines potential benefits of blockchain-based frameworks for securing routing protocols.
