Sustainability Struggles: Investigating the Interactions of Lean Practices and Barriers to Environmental Performance in Manufacturing

Abstract

Nowadays, companies are struggling to improve their environmental impact. In this sense, using Lean Manufacturing practices helps companies have a reduced environmental impact, thus leading to improved environmental performance. However, having this improvement takes a lot of work, and the journey is long and full of hurdles. The goal of this paper is to identify the barriers that hamper the improvement of environmental performance and which are the Lean Manufacturing practices which help companies reach an enhanced level of environmental performance. Through two systematic literature reviews, this paper aims to highlight both barriers and practices and provides future research directions.
