Vulnerability Assessments of Building Management Systems

Abstract

A building management system enables the remote monitoring and control of the infrastructure within a smart building. The elevator system, power meters, and gas and water supply systems can be monitored and administered by a building management system. A building management system is essentially an industrial control system that directly impacts the quality of life of the occupants of a building. As in the case of industrial control systems, building management systems are vulnerable to cyber attacks. Therefore, it is important to assess their vulnerabilities and understand the risks and impacts of cyber attacks. This chapter describes vulnerability assessments of two important components of a smart building management system, the building energy metering system and smart lighting system.
